How To Obtain Serbian Passport

Privileged admission to the citizenship of the Republic of Serbia for members of the Serbian nation

The Law on Citizenship of the Republic of Serbia (“Official Gazette of the RS”, No. 135/2004, 90/2007 and 24/2018, the „Law“) regulates the conditions for admission to the citizenship of the Republic of Serbia.

One of the general conditions that has to be met is that a person who wants to apply for citizenship of the Republic of Serbia must have an approved permanent residence, i.e. in other words he must stay for a certain period of time in the territory of the Republic of Serbia.

This period can be either 3 or 5 years depending on the basis of temporary residence in Serbia. Within this period provided by the Law, a person may be absent from the territory of the Republic of Serbia several times for up to ten months or once for up to six months.

However, the privileged admission of members of the Serbian nation to the citizenship of the Republic of Serbia is reflected in the fact that their fulfillment of this condition is not required.

The only thing that is needed is for the person who wants to apply for citizenship of the Republic of Serbia to prove his affiliation with the Serbian nation.

Belonging to the Serbian nation is proven by a document on which the applicant or one of his ancestors declared himself a member of the Serbian nation. It can be a certificate of citizenship of parents or ancestors if they are members of the Serbian nation, or a public document where the fact of citizenship of the Republic of Serbia is recorded or some of the documents in which that person or his ancestor declared himself a member of the Serbian nation, for example: baptismal certificate for the applicant, his parents or further ancestors if they are members of the Serbian nation, confirmation from the church-school municipality or association that he is active in the Serbian national community, and even the name and surname of the person applying.

It is especially interesting that in practice, our authorities enable easier admission of persons whose name and surname, in their opinion, indicate their belonging to the Serbian nation, without the need for further proof.
